HELENA, Mont. – The City of Helena is gearing up for the start of its annual prescribed burning activities within the City’s Open Lands. City prescribed burning activities may run between December 1 and April 15, as the weather allows. The prescribed burning activities involve the ignition of brush piles within the City’s forest fuel treatment units.
This year the City’s Open Lands team will focus on burning slash piles on the west face of Mount Ascension (Sections 6, Township 9 North, Range 3 West; Section 31 Township 10 North, Range 3 West; Section 1, Township 9 North, Range 4 West), adjacent to:
After Shock Trail
Archery Range Trail
Entertainment Trails
The crew will also burn piles on Mount Helena (Sections 26, 35 & 36 Township 10 North, Range 4 West), adjacent to:
Acropolis Trail
Diretissima Trail
Dump Out Trail
Mount Helena Ridge
McKelvey Trail
Prairie Trail.
The City’s forest fuel treatment units total approximately 125 acres. The burn piles were accumulated during forest sanitation/thinning treatment activities which took place from 2020 through 2024. The ignited piles will be monitored to ensure safety and air quality compliance.
